silence is golden

Never one to shrug off the luxury of a quiet moment, I have realized that those moments become scarcer. It both amuses and saddens me when, working on a project as a sound designer, I am asked to record some of the local environment with the human presence removed.

It can't be done in most places.

Growing up in Texas allowed me to experience many moments of silence and solitude. The vast landscape became a strange planet when you found yourself to be alone and away from any resemblance of human contact. Awe-inspiring indeed. And it's these moments that keep me a spiritual man. I may never associate with a religion, but the world has amazed me enough to see that there is something special about existence.

But like so many of our traditions, silence too, will be no more.

I play a wonderful balancing game out of convenience. It is easier to avoid unnecessary conversations by letting, or rather not letting, people know about you. To intentionally avoid promoting yourself sounds like career suicide, but trust me - sometimes its good to avoid those conversations.

"Oh, you're a filmmaker? You know what would make a good film?!"

Actually I don't, please do go on and tell me.

Fortunately I've managed to be in the right places to avoid many of these conversations. But, unfortunately, visiting family results in many variations of this situation. And so I'd rather not say much, if only to minimize repetition. It is also priceless to see the looks on their faces when they do discover something about yourself that you "neglected" to tell them. The audacity they have to look shocked and disappointed as if, for the very first time, they have become your best friend who is now heart broken over your trust issues.

Bah. I've been more honest about myself with strangers than with family. At least their judgement is sincere.

Where was I going with this?

Hey, it's a new year! Well for those who are in the majority when it comes to calendars. More work, more fun, and fewer complaints - that's the spirit we're after.

Always.
